If you are looking for a performance coach to help train your sales team to get better results, it is critical to make sure the person that you hire has a firm grasp of the sales process- and the sales record to prove it. Take someone who has walked the walk for decades, and gain from their wisdom.
Before you put your professional development (or your employees) in someone elses hands, ask yourself three important questions:
1) Does this person know the industry?
2) Is this person’s knowledge relevant, current, or helpful?
3) Can this person teach the concepts and techniques I need to know in a meaningful way.
That last one is especially important. It is better to have an excellent teach, a top-notch conveyor of ideas, than someone who is fantastic at their career, but can’t explain anything about how they do what they do. If the knowledge cannot be shared coherently, then you’re better off to keep looking for a coach with the passion and skill to share knowledge, not just possess it. Teaching well is a singular skill that has been often overlooked in the rush of people looking to hang a shingle out as a professional coach. Don’t get taken in by someone who likes to talk. Make sure you choose a coach who is willing and able to help you grow professionally.
