MySQL Auto Increment

If you're launching a store or an online order system there is a good chance that your first order id will be 1. This might not be the best way to ensure confidence in your first hundred or so customers. Instead you can set your order tables AUTO INCREMENT value to something slightly higher. Here is an SQL example of how you do this:ALTER TABLE table_name AUTO_INCREMENT = 1001

Internal Linking Experiment Results

I know that Google tends to read just the first link it finds from page A to page B. I was hoping that I could use the rel="nofollow" tag to have it ignore the first AB link and move on to the second AB link. However it seems to have just completely ignored both. So I've thought of two possible solutions. Solution 1:Place link 2 above link one in the source code and use CSS to show it below.Solution 2:Add some GET variables to the end of link 1 to make it appear to be a new page. example /newpage.html?rel=nofollowI however am going to stick with solution 1. However I would like to test solution 2 at some point simply to see how well it fares.

Waiting For Google Update

One of the tricky things about search placement is patience. Search placement experiments can take weeks and months to get results from. When you finally do get some results back you want to act on them right away. Which you can. But depending upon the site you make changes to it could again take weeks for that change to be recognized by Google. That's why its good to have multiple projects to work on, so you have something to work with to occupy your mind. Reminds me of the phrase a watched pot never boils.

Google Cache Update Frequency

The updating of Google's cache can be very important for a sites placement. How often any why they update the cache is a secret that Google keeps to them self, but I have my theories. My TheoryI think there are three man factors that go into how often a page's cache is update in Google.Updated Content FrequencyIf Google does not see any changes when it comes back to your site/page it might take that into its calculations for how often it decides to come back. I am considering testing out putting the date and time on each page it give it some elements of change.Links/PageRankA sites overall importance according to Google surely has some relevence in how often they crawl your site and therefor how often they can update their cache.RSS FeedsHaving an RSS feed on a page tells both people and search engines that this page has content that is updated on a regular bases.

Negotiations

I've been thinking about negotiations recently. Goals:win/winwin/looseloose/loose moreThe goals I listed are what I think should be priority. Even if there is a potential to create the win/loose in your favor I think it better to have a win/win. The business world is all about networking and having more friends in it certainly can't hurt. I'm pretty sure that there are entire books on this like Love Is The Killer App.Getting into the outcomes that contain losses or no fun, but I try not to think about it in terms of being cut throat. More so, I try and maintain a certain level of self respect. I frequently try to figure out what is the minimum outcome I'm willing to accept. That can also lead to ultimatums, which hurt negotiations, so start with suggesting above your minimum outcome or present a variety of options.

Initially I had written:So I'm checking out HostGator's hosting solutions and the only thing I'm having an issue with so far is using the PHP mail() function. I will certainly update this note if I find anything. Now the SolutionMy base problem was that I was testing an address @blueshift7.com on the new blueshift7.com server. However, I was not using this new host as my mail server. Instead I was using Google's Hosted solution. I was able to solve the problem by going to the MX Entry section of CPanel and changing the MX records to what they already stated in my DNS records (aspmx.l.google.com). Once the server knew that it wasn't managing the mail then it sent it on to where it was supposed to go. Problem solved.

Google Karma

Ever since I started SEO in '03 I've been aware of the idea of bad neighborhoods. This start with the idea of IP address or C block IPs.Now the idea has developed to include link neighborhoods, sites who link to each other, and specific categories dealing with adult content, predatory lending, and certain pharmaceuticals. The idea of certain industries being put into bad neighborhoods is paralleling with the idea of karma. In the world of SEO Google has made it bad karma to link to these type of sites. And that bad karma can reduce your search rankings if you promote them.

Link Seduction

Its common practice to identify sites that link to your competitors and get them to link to you as well. This helps in many ways from getting you into the right neighborhood and increasing your authority. One addition to this I didn't think of till now is that it also removes authority from your competitors. Pagerank is divided and distributed to all links from a given page. Adding your link to a page that your competitors have links from would further divide the PageRank that your competitors receive. In a way you are seducing the PageRank away from your competitors. So this leads me to a new idea, link seduction. Going through the links of a competitors website to identify where you can also get links and steal away some of your competitors authority. Even if the PageRank that you get from these links is only a little, your also weakening your competition.

While looking at some Google results pages today I noticed that they're bolding some synonyms in the text describing the page results and the keywords that match.A good example is the search for Lindy Hop Lessons Atlanta. Both the Swing ATL and Hop to the Beat results have the word classes bolded in the results, not the word lessons.
Apple VS Google Round One

Apple has been an icon for America's hip for quite some time, but now they're starting their fall. Quite a few mistakes have been made in the past few months.Lets start with the iPad. A good idea in concept, but bad in name and bad in execution. I will let someone else do the talking for me on this one.
Then there is the iPhone. This was top notch a few years back, but not so much any more. I expect the best from the device that should be the best. Two weeks ago I was about to head out of town and I was prompted to update my iPhone. Sadly it crashed and I lost all of my apps. Lame. Then there is the whole issue of their complete control over apps, no flash on their web browser, and the phone its self is falling apart. That's right, I have no more volume control because the buttons fell off.Now along comes Google. Not much competition between the two until Google starting going after the phone market. The Nexus One has responded to almost all of the complaints against apple and then some. Since AT&T has also taken out all of their mid level managers, there is also no one to solve the problems of the service. If they make a mistake on their billing there is no one to fix it.I've finally decided to take my side in this argument and I'm choosing Google. Thats right, I've ordered the Nexus One, the Google Phone. Good bye iPhone. Its been cool and all.
